This is my favorite (favourite?) work of apologetics. Chesterton shows up the wisdom of the age (the zeitgeist) with a superior understanding of the human experience, from the heights of its rationality to the basest levels of its cravings and desires.

Roman Catholics will sometimes cluck about Chesterton's later conversion to Romanism. Let them cluck; that which is truly catholic about this work -- and there is plenty -- is not discernibly Roman.
