Violation of one's marriage covenant by becoming sexually involved with someone who is not their spouse.

Paul clearly teaches that marriage is given to us as an ilustration of Christ's covenant with the church. This should give us an idea of why adultery is condemned unequivocally by the Church -- a husband betraying his wife is a picture of Christ betraying the church, and a wife betraying her husband is a picture of the church betraying her savior.

Adultery is but one of many flavors of sexual sin. Many people confuse adultery with fornication.
