Cognitive dissonance

The psychological tension that arises from holding two conflicting thoughts at the same time. More precisely, it is the perception of incompatibility between two simultaneously experienced facts, observations, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, or behaviors.

Perhaps the greatest disservice that postmodern and eastern thought systems have rendered to the western world has been to ease our discomfort with cognitive dissonance. Contradiction is an untenable logical state; rather than seeking its resolution in greater clarity of thought or identification of an underlying paradox, we are rather encouraged to "embrace" the contradiction.
