The Bible Problem

On the one hand, there are legitimate complaints that Christians have been unduly cruel toward people identifying themselves with homosexual tendencies and lifestyles in ways that we are not toward others who engage in other forms of sexual sin.

At the same time, there is a strong and distressing push within many churches to distance ourselves from the clear teachings of Scripture on what is and is not legitimate sexual expression. As Douglas Wilson aptly notes [1],

Now homosexuality is not the most important issue in the Bible, not by a long shot. But it is, thank God, one of the clearest. [...] If someone were to ask me whether the Bible teaches that Jesus went to Capernaum, I would say yes, it does. I would not be in agony over the question. It is not the most important question, but it is clear. If someone were to ask if the apostle Paul taught that homosexual behavior (both male and female forms) is the dead end result of idolatry, I would say yes again. No agony in the exegesis whatever.

Metrosexual, Bi-curious, and Other Flavors of Queer Chic

"Bi-curious" was, for a while, the most popular female sexual orientation on myspace, and on Yahoo! Profiles before that. The emo-boy look is gender-elastic/androgynous. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy become a mass-market phenomenon. Madonna and Brittney locked lips a few years ago, and Katy Perry is riding a single to the top of the charts.

Gender plasticity and confusion has become a staple of 21st-century western culture. This is exactly what Paul tells us to expect from a civilization that's become confused about who God is and refuses to honor Him as such (see Greek/Romans 1:18-32).
