Masculinity

We're sick and tired of limp-wristed, soft-sell visions of Christian masculinity that spend so much time apologizing for the sins of men and elaborating upon what masculinity isn't that they never get around to saying what masculinity actually is. We already know that men are wicked, vile, selfish, and sinful (just like women!). What we need to know is what virtues are present in the masculine image of God which we still bear (fractured though it may be).

We're equally tired of definitions of manhood that are completely androgynous. "Faithfully representing Christ to the world" is a useful description of Christianity, but it is not a useful definition of "biblical manhood" or "Christian masculinity" because it can be applied equally and indifferently to both men and to women.

Stuff...

In searching for a "biblical masculinity", we must answer a series of question:

  • What does the bible say ontologically about men and women as men and women?
  • What does the bible say teleologically about men and women as men and women?
  • What does the Bible praise in men as opposed to women, and visa-versa?
  • What examples does the Bible set up of men and women, and to what extent are we to learn from their maleness and femaleness?

The hermeneutical crux of everything:

  • Does "male and female He created them" speak more of our distinctness as bearers of the imago Dei in distinct ways or of our sameness as bearers of a single imago Dei?
