Synopsis

A compelling whirlwind tour of organized crime in the era of globalization, from the former Soviet satellites (mafioso capitalism) to India and the United Arab Emirates (international banking) to Africa (facade governments, fraud, and conflict resources) to Brazil (cybercrime) to Japan (the legitimized underworld) to China ("the future of organized crime").

Perhaps not coincidentally, released shortly before the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Doc's Take

Overall an enjoyable read, although Glenny occasionally slips from reporting into causal analysis, offering as the "only solutions" options which simply exchange one slew of problems for another (legalizing narcotics, tightly regulated global money markets, etc). I do not doubt organized crime will find ways to insinuate itself into and profit from every one of these "solutions", albeit perhaps at smaller margins than they make today.
