A challenge to idolatry of the clock (and all of our other modern cultural idolatries that seem to follow in its footsteps).
Doc's Take
I like Os's style. He was saying what many of us have caught on to years before we caught on to it -- that slavishly following relevance sets us in mortal peril of losing the things that always have and always will make us truly relevant -- our countercultural gospel. Guinness uses the clock as the image of the ubiquitous idol of our day, demanding our constant (incessant?) awareness above and beyond the things which are eternal. To be Christian is not to ignore the clock or the contemporary world we find ourselves in; it is simply to, as happens in every generation and every culture, keep it from ascending a throne and pretending to supplant Jesus Christ as the one who can truly deliver us.
Plus, any direct descendant of the master of all brewers is okay in my book.
